How To Create A Colorful Capsule Wardrobe

Welcome to my winter capsule wardrobe! I recommend watching this video above while you scroll through these photos so you can listen to the details and some tips on how to create a capsule while looking at the pieces I’m talking about!

This is my first time doing a capsule wardrobe and I wanted it to be colorful and full of statement pieces and not limit me too much to neutral basics. The video is full of lots more details but here’s a quick summary of things I found helpful in putting it all together!

  1. The most common “rules” for a capsule wardrobe are to choose 30 items for 3 months. I wanted to stay in that range but also didn’t want to unnecessarily limit myself since I care a lot about having variety for Instagram photos, and because I have lots of events this season in multiple climates. I ended up with 37 items and after the first month it’s clear that that is plenty!

  2. I found it helpful to stick to solid colors and only have a few patterns. It’s easier to mix and match solid colors unless your patterns are neutral.

  3. I didn’t choose a strict palette ahead of time, but I started with a couple items I knew I wanted to include and then tried to find the rest based on what colors would work well with those pieces! I still tried to have a good variety of colors so that I’m not completely sick of yellow and pink by February.

  4. I made sure to still include some neutrals — you can still have lots of statement pieces and colorful pieces that pair well with a neutral piece, and that will give you much more room for variety! I made sure to include basic jeans, black leggings, black jeans, a denim skirt, a white sweater, and a couple other neutral items.

  5. I only counted “style” items in the capsule. I still have other clothes outside of the 37 for working out and sleeping basically. I also didn’t count shoes or accessories because I don’t feel like my closet is overwhelmed in that area! I typically already stick to about 3-5 pairs of shoes and a couple accessories.

Most of the items I purchased from Crossroads Trading, and many items I already owned so they aren’t online unfortunately! But here are 4 items from my closet that you can shop!

Leopard Skirt | Green Slip Dress | Boots (similar) | Off Shoulder Navy Sweater

There are literally endless combinations once you get going on putting outfits together, but here are 39 different combinations which is plenty for three months! I have been terrible at documenting my ootd’s but check out my Instagram for some of the combos I’ve already worn!

What’s your favorite look out of these?! I think mine is the third one in the top row — sequin skirt with yellow sweater!
